EVO-ONE showing Solid Red and Yellow, will not show just Red

0 votes

I have a 1999 Toyota Avalon and I have an EVO-ONE with the TOY-1 T-Harness.

It is programmed for Function 2 Mode 4, as listed on 19201, and Function 20 Mode 2 as listed there as well.

The factory wiring harness is like this:

Factory Function    Factory Color    TOY-1 color

IGN-1                    Black / Yellow    Pink

IGN-2                    Black                Orange

12 Volt +               White / Red       Red

Start                     Red                   Yellow

(no connection)    White   ( labeled as Start 2 in EVO-ONE manual, but no wire exist in factory harness )

Black   ( Grounded to Frame bolt )

So, the Mode 4 looks to be correct on Function 2, but when I try to program the unit to the car, I get the LED's doing this:

Blue, Red, Yellow, Blue and Red,  Blue, Red, Yellow, Blue and Red, and just kept repeating that.

When I release on Red, Both Red and Yellow light solid, and inserting the key does nothing.

The EVO-ONE has a Crime Stopper remote that is a single button remote, as the factory remote can not operate the remote start feature on this model car.

I was able to program Function 5 to accept the remote, but still the car will not start and I can not get the EVO-ONE to give me just a solid Red light.

I have checked all my connections and everything is correct.

Is there some other setting that needs to set to make this work ?

I saw another Toyota owner that had a problem like this and Function 38 had to be changed, but they were using OEM remote to start, not an aftermarket Crime Stopper RF kit.

Thanks

I would start by checking your connection for the Yellow wire in the 20 pin connector , IT HAS TO BE CONNECTED TO IGNITION.

Make sure that the Yellow wire in the 20 pin connector is not getting 12v all the time, only when the key is turned to the IGNITION position.

Also the KeySens wire is important, make sure that the White/Black from the 20 pin connector is connected to the right Key Sense wire, it should only show ground (negative) when the key is inserted into the barrel.

I checked the Yellow wire on the 20 pin and it is only getting 12 volts when the key is in the ON position.

I also checked the keysense wire and when the car is off it shows 8 volts between that wire and ground.

When I insert the key, the voltage drops to zero and it shows continuity between that wire and ground.
disconnect the yellow wire from the 20 pin connector to your ignition wire temporarily and try to program unit,

Also check if there is voltage on your Pink wire (ignition) on the t-harness when key is in the OFF position.

It would seem that the Evo One is sensing IGNITION ON when you are trying to program the unit
No voltage on the pink wire with the key off.  Disconnecting the yellow wire did not change anything.

There are 2 IGN wires, pink is the primary and Orange is IGN 2, both show zero volts when the key is not in the ON position.

Keep the yellow disconnected, and also disconnect the  KEYSENS wire just to see if you can get in the proper programming mode,  ONLY THE RED LED LIT UP.

Another quick test you could do to narrow down where you issue is coming from is to toggle the FlashLinkManager to connection mode:remote starter, THEN hold down the programming button, plug in the datalink from the Flashlink updater and try to release on RED (led)  While connected to the computer you should be able to select any led color, ( red, yellow, blueand red,or blue IF YOU CAN SELECT RED WHILE CONNECTED TO THE COMPUTER, THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH YOUR CONNECTIONS IN THE VEHICLE

So, I should take the unit out of the car, plug it into the computer and link updater in the house while holding down the programming button, and the LED's should start cycling with just the data link cable connected and nothing else ?

The keysense wire shows 8 volts on it when there is no key in.

Is this normal ?  Also, when I am holding in the programming button and I put in the 20 pin white connector, I hear clicking from under the hood.

I have seen the same thing happen in Youtube videos, and as soon as I plug in the 6 in T-harness wire the clicking stops, so I am guessing this is normal, but what exactly is it that is ticking under the hood ?

The only wires that are attached are to the keysense and the sync and Data+ and Data -.

Not sure exactly what it is doing, but want to let you know so that if that points to something you will know.

I have to wait for the new updater to arrive, Version 2, should be here next week, and then I will do the test you describe, if I have the instructions correct, if not let me know.

Thanks

Bill

you can do the same test using a spare datalink cable, cut one end off, and  just connect red to 12v positive and black to ground OR disconnect all the connectors from the EVO All, and hold down the programming button and JUST plug in the MAIN 6 PIN harness and try to select red, and check if the yellow led is still on.

With just power and ground connected you should be able to select the mode you want as a test.

With just the t-harness connected, Evo One disconnected, does your vehicle start normally?

You should not be connecting anything while you have the programming button depressed.

It is an EVO-ONE, not an EVO-ALL.  With just the T-harness connected, the car will not start, because the 20 pin white and 8 pin red connectors for the bypass are not hooked up.

The instructions say to hold down the programming button on the unit, plug in the 20 pin white, the 8 pin red, then the 6 pin T-harness and then release the button when the Red LED is lit.

I will try just plugging in the 6 pin T-harness and see if I can get just a RED LED without the Yellow also, but this means the bypass would not be hooked up.

What will this tell me ?
I tried just the 6 pin T-harness with the programming button pressed and released on RED, and yellow came on with RED, just like when the all the connectors are connected.

What does this mean ?

Is the unit bad ?

Yellow is direct indication that the unit thinks ignition is on. (12v present on either the small yellow or big pink wire).

To me, sounds like there's a short somewhere or the unit is not flashed properly.

In the EVO-ONE box, there should be the regular 6-pin main harness that you're currently not using since you have the THAR-ONE-TOY1 harness. Lets ignore that t-harness for now. Connect only the RED and BLACK wires from the regular 6-pin connector to 12V and ground respectively.

The pictures below is what Jesus Monroy was trying to get you to do. Basically, the unit only has power and ground (red and black wires) from either the datalink port or the 6-pin main harness.

Picture 1 : datalink with only 12v and ground

Picture 2 : 6-pin main harness, with only 12V and ground connected

I tried what you said.  Hooked the unit to a car battery, just power and ground while holding the programming button.

Release on RED and Red and Yellow lit up both, just like all the other times.

What does this mean?  Is the unit bad ?
Doubt it. Reflashing the unit will most likely fix this.
Once I get the flash updater I will reflash it and hopefully that will fix it.

The fact that it worked the first day and twice the second day, then went haywire, that has me concerned.

It is not easy to take it in and out, especially once the dash is back together.

I hope if I get it working again that it does not happen again.

I will update you once I know more.

Thanks

Bill
Do you have 12V constant on the pink wire of the 6 pin harness ?
Red is the only one that has 12 volt constant.  Pink is IGN-1 and it has power when the key is in the ON position, as does Orange which is IGN-2

Yellow is Start and it only gets power when cranking.

I hooked just the red and black wires to test it and got the same results, stopped when just red LED was on, and the Yellow LED lit solid along with the Red LED.

Clearly, something is wrong inside the unit.

Hopefully, flashing it again will clear whatever is wrong.

If you have any other suggestions, please let me know.

Thanks

Bill
I got the flash updater V2 today.  I reflashed the module with the 1.15 and reloaded and saved the settings using the software.

Set 2 to 4 and 20 to 2.  Even tried setting 2 to 1 and 2 to 2.

No change in behavior of the unit.

With just power and ground attached, releasing on Just Red, Red and Yellow LED's light solid.

I think this unit is bad.  It worked for a day and a half, then died.  What do I do now ?
You will need to contact whomever you have purchased the unit from. Before connecting any other unit in there, I would go through every connection just so that you do not see this happen again.
I just sent him an e-mail.  I checked all the wires, 4 times now.  All of them are correct.  Pink coming from the main power connector is IGN-1 and only has power when the key is in the IGN position.

The unit did work for the first 24 hours.  I think something inside just burnt out.  I have seen the same thing a few times over the years.  With the components being so small, surface mount, and the lack of burn in testing, it happens.

Usually within the first few days of owning something, if it is going to fail, that is when it happens.

Really a pain though, because the car won't start with the unit out.  I have to undo all the wiring and put it back to factory to make the car start without the unit in there.

I wish there was direct RMA support through the website.

One thing I did notice, not anything that makes it not work, but the TOY-1 cable is larger than the factory cable that comes with the unit.  Makes it real hard to insert the plug and even harder to remove it.

Quality control needs to be checked on the specs of that cable.

All you have to do is jump the White/Red and White/Green together, and the Yellow/Red and Yellow/Green together. The car will start right afterwards.

I understand this, but RMA directly through Fortin is for products bought only through Fortin. Same as when buying something from X store, if i need to return it, I'm going through the store not the manufacturer.

i smiled when I read this because it reminds me of one of factory harness's we got "had" to be bought with the whole steering coloumn attached to it. Bettter it be tight than too loose though, especially on high current ignition systems.

The specs on the Thar-One-Toy1 (and all other harness's) are from factory specs and also from in car testing. Obviously, we cannot get our hands on 1999 vehicles but i think you get my point.

The cable on the TOY-1 is tight on the EVO-ONE, not the car harness, the car side is fine.

One thing I have noticed, I can not get the unit to do a factory reset.

I hold down the program button, plug in the data link, release on RED, the red and Yellow lite up.  If I hold down the program button again, the lights don't cycle, just the red blinks twice while the yellow stays solid.

I can not get into the bypass menu.  It says not connected.  The remote start menu I can access fine.

I saw someone else had this same issue.  It did not say if they ever got it to work.

Any idea why it is doing this ?  I am thinking because the unit is bad, but I am getting another unit, and will be programming from scratch, so I want to make sure I do it right.

Thanks

Bill
As stated before, please contact your retailer and then please call tech support before reconnecting the unit in the vehicle so we can double check your connections.
